Short — 1 sentence
SleepTrace is a free iPhone app that records your snoring and reads your sleep stages from the sound of your night, with no wearable required.
Medium — 1 paragraph
SleepTrace is a free iPhone app that tracks sleep using the phone’s microphone instead of a wearable. Placed on the nightstand, it records the night, labels every snoring episode with a decibel reading and a playable clip, and classifies awake, light, deep and REM sleep every 30 seconds — all on the device, so it works offline. It also flags apparent breathing pauses so users have something concrete to show a doctor. SleepTrace is a wellness app and does not diagnose. It was launched in July 2026 by Jan Kohlhaas, an independent developer based in Haan, Germany.
Long — with the differentiator
SleepTrace is a free iPhone app that turns a night of audio into a readable picture of your sleep. Where most trackers infer sleep from movement and heart rate at the wrist, SleepTrace reads the one signal wearables physically cannot capture: sound. It classifies sleep stages every 30 seconds from the night’s audio, detects snoring, coughing, sleep talking and teeth grinding, and marks apparent breathing pauses with the recording attached. Everything is analysed on the device; whether any data is ever used to improve the model is a separate setting the user controls, and declining it leaves the app fully functional. Snoring detection and sleep stages are included in the free tier, where competitors typically place them behind a subscription. SleepTrace is a wellness app, not a medical device, and does not diagnose any condition.
Story angles
Four things worth writing about
-
The snoring paywall
Most sleep apps put snore detection behind a subscription. Sleep Cycle charges $9.99 a month for it; SnoreLab's free tier stops working on consecutive nights. SleepTrace includes snoring detection, labelled clips and sleep stages in its free tier. The angle: the feature people install a sleep app for is usually the one they have to pay for.
Fits: Consumer tech, personal finance, health
-
Consent as a switch, not a checkbox
SleepTrace analyses the night on the device. Whether any data is ever used to improve the model is a separate control the user sets, and declining it leaves the app fully functional, offline included. The angle: what informed consent looks like when it is engineered rather than written into a policy.
Fits: Privacy, data protection, tech policy
-
Sound as the blind spot of wearables
A ring or a watch knows that you moved and that your pulse rose. It cannot hear snoring, breathing pauses, talking or the room. The Apple Watch does not record audio at all. The angle: the entire wearable category is deaf to the dimension that often explains a bad night.
Fits: Health tech, wearables, sleep science
-
One developer against the hardware industry
SleepTrace is built by a single independent developer competing with Oura, Apple, Fitbit and Garmin. No device to sell means the app has to be worth using on its own. The angle: what independent software can still do in a category dominated by hardware.
Fits: Startup, indie dev, business

Please note
What we ask you not to write
SleepTrace does not diagnose sleep apnea or any other condition, and we would rather be left out of an article than described as if it did. It flags snoring patterns and apparent breathing pauses and hands the user the recording — a prompt to see a doctor, not a substitute for one.
It also is not a clinical measurement. Sleep staging outside a lab is an estimate, whether it comes from a phone, a ring or a watch.
