The useful question is not which sleep tracker is best. It is which signal each one reads — because that decides what it can never tell you.
A ring and a watch measure your body: pulse, heart-rate variability, movement, blood oxygen. A phone-based tracker measures the room: breathing, snoring, pauses, the sounds you make. Neither can do the other’s job. If you want continuous cardiovascular data, wear something. If you want to know what your night actually sounded like — and hear it — a microphone is the only thing that captures it.

Where the wearables genuinely win
It would be easy to write this page as though the ring and the watch were the problem. They are not. They are very good at what they do, and there are things they do that SleepTrace simply cannot.
Continuous body data. Heart rate, heart-rate variability, blood oxygen and skin temperature through the night — that needs a sensor touching you. A microphone will never produce those numbers. If recovery metrics are what you are after, a wearable is the right purchase.
Regulatory standing on apnea. Apple’s sleep-apnea notification feature was cleared by the FDA in 2024. SleepTrace has no such clearance and does not claim one: it is a wellness app, and what it surfaces is a screening hint plus the recording behind it. What no wearable can hear
A wrist or finger sensor knows that you moved, that your pulse rose, that your oxygen dipped. It does not know why. The cause is very often audible: snoring that got louder through the night, a pause in breathing, a partner, a street, a dog, your own voice.
This is not a marketing distinction, it is a physical one. The Apple Watch does not record audio at all, so snoring, sleep talking and teeth grinding are invisible to it by design. A ring has no microphone either. Whatever the cause of a bad night sounded like, it went unrecorded.
