Sleep tracking app for Android: free options compared
What a phone can track, which Android apps do it, and what is happening to Google Fit.
Which sleep tracking app suits you on Android depends on one question: do you want to hear your night, or measure your body? Phone-only apps such as SleepTrace (free plan with nightly tracking and 3 playable clips a month), Sleep as Android and Sleep Cycle listen through the microphone and need nothing on your wrist. Heart rate and HRV need a sensor on your body, which no phone app can supply. Google Fit is on its way out: Google says the Fit APIs will be deprecated in 2026 and that it will invite Fit users to move their data to the Google Health app later this year.

Android sleep tracking apps at a glance
| App | How it senses sleep | Free or paid | Snoring and sounds |
|---|---|---|---|
| SleepTrace | Microphone only. Stages are estimated from the night's audio. | Free plan: nightly tracking and 3 playable clips a month. Premium: see pricing. | Detects snoring, talking and coughing; saves clips of them. |
| Sleep as Android | Phone sensors; works with smart watches including Wear OS (vendor docs). | "Try it for free" on the vendor site; no price stated there. | Lists "sleep talk and snoring recording, snoring stats and anti-snoring, room noise stats". |
| Sleep Cycle | Phone-based, on Android through Google Play; also has an Apple Watch app on iOS. | 30-day free trial advertised on sleepcycle.com. | Detects "nighttime noises like snoring, coughing, or sleep talking" (App Store text), which also puts snore detection under Premium. |
Vendor and store pages opened on 2 November 2026; features and prices change. SleepTrace is our own app, so read the table with that in mind.
Best free sleep tracking app for Android: how to choose
The best free sleep tracking app for Android has to pass three tests. It must record every night without a paywall in the way, show you something you can act on rather than a score alone, and be clear about what it does with the audio. On the first test, the answers differ in kind. SleepTrace's free plan has no end date but caps playable clips at 3 a month. Sleep Cycle advertises a 30-day trial. Sleep as Android says you can try it free but states no price on the pages we opened.
On the second test, ask what you want to find out. If it is "do I snore, and when", you want a recording. If it is "what did my night look like", you want stages and a timeline, with the caveat that every consumer app estimates stages; none matches a sleep lab. Our comparison of the best sleep apps goes through who each one suits.
On the third, read the store listing's privacy section. SleepTrace analyses the night on the device; Premium adds an encrypted cloud backup of clips, as the pricing page lists. Whichever app you choose, check what the listing says about data leaving the phone.
What happened to the Google Fit sleep tracking app
Many searches for a Google Fit sleep tracking app are really looking for the app Google built to collect data from watches and phones. Two Google pages, both opened 2 November 2026, describe where it is going. The Google Fit developer page says the Fit APIs, including the REST API, “will be deprecated in 2026”, that developers could not sign up for them after 1 May 2024, and recommends the Google Health API or Health Connect instead. Google’s announcement of the Google Health app (7 May 2026) says: “We’ll invite Google Fit users to migrate their data into Google Health app later this year.” Neither page names a shutdown date for the Fit app itself. For sleep data it means this: an app that relied on Fit to share sleep with other apps has to switch to Health Connect or the Google Health API.
Sleep as Android lists Google Fit among its integrations on its vendor site, which shows how apps used it as a hub; whether a given integration continues after the shutdown is a question for each developer. SleepTrace on Android does not depend on Google Fit to record your night.
Android phone or Android watch: where sensing happens
An Android sleep tracking app that uses the microphone hears breathing, snoring, talking and coughing. It cannot read your pulse. A watch can read pulse and movement, but it hears nothing unless an app turns the microphone on. Apps such as Sleep as Android pair both: the phone for sound and sensors, a Wear OS watch for extra signals. SleepTrace takes the phone-only route on Android and does not need a watch.
Practical settings matter more than the app name. Plug the phone in and put it within a couple of metres of your head. Leave the app open, since the screen dims by itself and closing the app stops the recording. A phone that goes quiet at 3 a.m. gives you half a night.
What SleepTrace does not detect: mouth breathing, reflux, teeth grinding, sleeping position, movement, temperature or sleep paralysis episodes. The apnea indicator is a screening value (a risk level and an average index), not a diagnosis.
If snoring is the reason you are looking, see the snoring app page, which covers the Android options in more detail.
Common questions
Android sleep tracking, answered
It depends on what you want to learn. SleepTrace's free plan records every night and plays back 3 clips a month, Sleep Cycle advertises a 30-day free trial, and Sleep as Android says you can try it for free without stating a price on its site. Pick by the question you want answered, then test it for a week.
Google is phasing Fit out, but we found no fixed shutdown date. Google's developer page says the Google Fit APIs will be deprecated in 2026, and Google's announcement of the Google Health app (7 May 2026) says it will invite Google Fit users to migrate their data into the Google Health app later this year. Check Google's pages for current dates.
No. Phone-based apps record sound and estimate sleep stages with nothing on your wrist. A watch adds pulse and movement data, which a phone microphone cannot supply.
No. SleepTrace shows apparent breathing pauses and a screening indicator (a risk level and an average index), but a diagnosis needs a sleep study arranged by a doctor.
SleepTrace is a wellness app and does not diagnose, treat or prevent any medical condition.
