Snoring app for Apple Watch and Garmin: what works

A watch can wake you or nudge you. To record and replay your snoring, you still need a microphone.

Short answer

Apple's own sleep tracking on the Apple Watch does not record snoring: Apple's support pages describe sleep stages, a Sleep Score, heart rate and respiratory rate, and a sleep apnea notification based on the accelerometer. If you want a snoring app for Apple Watch, you have two options: an iPhone app that records the night and may use the watch for extras (SleepTrace, Sleep Cycle, Pillow), or an anti-snoring app that sends a vibration to your wrist when snoring starts (Koala Nap and similar). The sleep tracking chapter of Garmin's Instinct Crossover manual does not list snoring.

Best snoring app for Apple Watch: record or interrupt?

Snoring apps for the Apple Watch come down to one of two jobs. If the job is to see how much you snore, the watch adds little: it has no way to hand you a replayable recording, and the recording is the evidence. If the job is to stop yourself from snoring in the moment, a haptic alert is the point of the watch, and apps like Koala Nap are built around it. Koala Nap's own listing promises "gentle alerts when snoring starts, with your iPhone, Apple Watch or earphones". The listing gives no evidence that the alerts reduce snoring, so treat it as a nudge, not a treatment.

Free downloads exist, but each app we opened pairs a free download with in-app purchases or a trial. Koala Nap offers a 7-day free trial. Pillow's free download covers basic tracking, while its sound recordings sit behind Premium. SleepTrace's free plan records every night with 3 playable clips a month, and the watch is optional.

What the Apple Watch can and cannot tell you about snoring

Apple's page on tracking sleep says that, with Track Sleep with Apple Watch turned on and the watch worn for at least one hour, you see time spent Awake or in REM, Core or Deep sleep, plus heart rate and respiratory rate. Series 8 and later and Ultra models can also compare nightly wrist temperature. None of that is a recording of sound.

The sleep apnea notification is separate. Apple says the watch "uses the accelerometer to look for breathing disturbances while you sleep", needs the watch worn on at least 10 nights within a 30-day period, and is not intended to diagnose, treat or aid in the management of sleep apnea. Apple adds that some people with sleep apnea will never receive an alert. So a quiet watch does not rule out snoring or apnea, and a notification is not a diagnosis. Details are in our article on how accurate the Apple Watch sleep apnea feature is.

If you do own a watch, the sensible combination is a phone app that listens (for the snoring, the clips and the timing) and the watch for heart rate. SleepTrace is built that way: it works on the phone alone, and reads heart rate and HRV from an Apple Watch only if you have one.

A snoring app for Garmin and other watches

Many Garmin owners want the watch on their wrist to count their snoring. As far as the sleep tracking chapter of Garmin's Instinct Crossover manual goes, it does not (other Garmin models may differ): the sleep statistics it names are total hours of sleep, sleep stages, sleep movement and sleep score, and it has a separate Breathing Variations topic. A December 2025 report by Gadgets & Wearables (source) says Garmin may be preparing snore detection, with sound captured by a microphone in the watch or a paired device, and adds that it is unclear when or if it will roll out. Until Garmin ships it, treat any snoring figure on a Garmin watch as unconfirmed.

If you wear a Garmin and want recordings, the practical route is a phone app that records the room, like SleepTrace on iPhone or Android. We have not tested SleepTrace together with a Garmin watch, so do not expect the watch data to appear in the app.

The same logic applies to other watches: the watch's strength is the wrist (pulse, movement, a vibration); the phone's strength is the microphone.

Koala and other anti-snoring watch apps: what to check

Koala Nap is an iPhone app that lists itself under Medical in the App Store. Whatever the category, an anti-snoring app for the Apple Watch does the same basic thing: the phone listens, and when the detector decides someone is snoring, the watch taps the wrist. Three things decide whether that works for you. First, the phone must pick up the right snorer, and no app can separate two sleepers with certainty. Second, the alert has to be enough to make you turn, not enough to wake you fully. Third, the detector must be right. Two 2025 studies on smartphone snore detection (PMID 40153546, PMID 40190583) reported sensitivities of 86.3% and 89.8%, so missed episodes and false alarms both happen. Neither study tested the apps named here.

If you snore loudly, stop breathing for a moment, or wake gasping, an alert app is not the answer to that question. That is a reason to talk to a doctor. Our snoring app page explains what SleepTrace records and where its limits are.

Common questions

Snoring apps and watches, answered

Apple's support pages on sleep tracking describe sleep stages, a Sleep Score, heart rate and respiratory rate, and do not mention snoring recordings. The sleep apnea notification, according to Apple, uses the accelerometer to look for breathing disturbances. To replay your snoring you need an app with a microphone, usually on the iPhone.

Several apps offer a free download, but the ones we opened (Koala Nap, Sleep Cycle, Pillow) combine it with a trial or paid plan for the snoring features. SleepTrace's free plan records every night with 3 playable clips a month and does not require a watch.

The sleep tracking chapter of Garmin's Instinct Crossover manual lists total hours of sleep, sleep stages, sleep movement and sleep score, and does not mention snoring. A December 2025 report says Garmin may be preparing snore detection, with no release date. For recordings, use a phone app.

It can nudge you to change position when its detector hears snoring. The listings we opened give no evidence that this reduces snoring, and no app treats the cause. Loud snoring with breathing pauses or gasping is a reason to see a doctor.

No. SleepTrace records and analyses the night with the phone alone, on iPhone and Android. An Apple Watch is optional and adds heart rate and HRV.
